Reetta Vuokko-Syrjänen

 Reetta Vuokko-Syrjänen (b. 1985) is an award-winning author from Tampere, Finland. She writes for middle grade to adult audiences, and her genres range from science fiction to magical realism. Vuokko-Syrjänen's main topics of interest are inequality, social exclusion and formation of human identity.

Her first novel, Syntykeho, eli miten juosta pakoon ilman jalkoja (Genetosoma, or the No-Legged Race, Osuuskumma Publishing 2022), is a cyberpunk thriller set in a future where mind and body are separate things, and bodies have become a highly priced commodity. Syntykeho was widely praised and was shortlisted for Blogistania Finlandia award. It is set to come out in Portuguese in 2027.

Vuokko-Syrjänen's literary roots are in short stories. She has won the Atorox award for best Finnish SF short story in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and 1st place in prestigious Portti short story competition in 2022. Some of her short stories have been collected in Mahdottomien kukkien puutarha (The Garden of Impossible Flowers, Osuuskumma 2023). Her short stories have been translated to English and Estonian. Her works in Estonian have been collected together with Maarit Lejon in Soome ulme 3.

For younger audiences, Vuokko-Syrjänen's latest books Harhakoto combines Finnish folklore with current issues about poverty in childhood and systemic abuse of power. It has been very well received in Finland.
